Questions strangers ask Tesla owners
Every Tesla owner gets asked the same questions. Here are short answers you can borrow.
- "What happens if it rains while you're charging?" Nothing. Plugs and ports are sealed and power only flows once they're safely connected. See charging in the rain.
- "How far does it go?" Roughly 230 to 360 miles in real driving depending on the model, less in winter. See Range explained.
- "How long does it take to charge?" About 20 to 30 minutes for a big top-up at a Supercharger, or overnight at home.
- "Where do you charge it?" Mostly at home overnight. On trips, at Superchargers and other rapid chargers.
- "How much does it cost to charge?" A few pence a mile at home on an EV tariff. See Charging costs.
- "Doesn't the battery wear out?" Slowly. Teslas come with a long battery warranty. See Battery degradation and warranty.
- "Can you go on long trips?" Yes. The car plans charging stops for you.
- "Is it fast?" Yes.
- "Do you need special insurance?" Ordinary car insurance, though premiums can be high. See Insurance.
- "Does it pay road tax?" Yes, since April 2025. See Road tax.
- "What happens if you run out?" It's rare, and breakdown services can tow you to a charger.
- "Can I use a normal plug?" Yes, slowly, with the Mobile Connector.
- "Is it hard to service?" Very little routine servicing: no oil changes.
- "How do you open the door?" See How to open Tesla doors.
- "Would you buy another?" Up to you.
