Is it safe to charge in the rain?
Yes. Car charging connectors and ports are designed to be used outdoors in all weather. No power flows until the plug is fully connected and the car and charger have checked the connection is safe.
Why rain isn't a problem
- The plug and port are sealed when connected.
- Power is switched off until the car and charger "handshake".
- Chargers have protection that cuts power if a fault is detected.
Sensible precautions
- Don't plug in if the connector is damaged or the cable is cut.
- Shake off standing water from the plug before connecting, and don't leave plugs lying in puddles.
- Flood water: don't charge a car that has been in flood water or where the charger is under water.
- Thunderstorms: charging in a storm is generally considered low risk, but if lightning is close, waiting it out in the car or a building is the same advice as for any outdoor activity.
- Snow and ice: clear snow from around the port and don't force a frozen door. See Charge port won't open.
