Charge port light colours explained

Checked 2 October 2026. Rules and prices change, so check the sources below before you rely on a figure.

The ring of light around the charge port tells you what the car is doing. Your car's owner's manual has the definitive list for your model; this is what the colours usually mean.

Light What it means What to do
White or light blue Port door is open and the car is ready, or the latch has released Plug in, or take the cable out
Blue The car has detected a connector Wait a moment for charging to start
Blinking blue The car is talking to the charger, or charging is scheduled for later Check the charging screen for a scheduled time
Blinking green Charging Nothing
Solid green Charging finished Unplug and move on
Amber The connector is not fully in Push the plug in firmly
Blinking amber Charging at reduced current on AC Check the charger or socket; lower current is normal on some supplies
Red A fault has stopped charging Read the message on the touchscreen, then try again or try another charger

Common fixes for amber and red

  • Unplug, wait ten seconds and plug in again.
  • Check the plug and port for grit, ice or water.
  • Try a different cable or charger to see whether the fault is the car or the charger.
  • A repeated red light on every charger is worth reporting through the Tesla app's Service menu.
