Charging cable stuck? How to release it

Checked 2 October 2026.

A Tesla locks the charging cable in place while charging so nobody can pull it out. Normally it unlocks when you stop charging and unlock the car.

Try these first

  1. Stop the session. On a non-Tesla rapid charger, end the session on the charger screen or in its app before unplugging. The car will not release the plug while DC charging is live.
  2. Unlock the car with your phone or key card, then try again.
  3. Press the button on a Tesla charger handle.
  4. Tap Unlock or Stop Charging on the touchscreen or in the app.
  5. Wait a minute. After a session ends, the charger and car can take a few seconds to release.

Still stuck?

Most Model 3 and Model Y cars have a manual charge port release inside the boot, near the charge port. It is a small loop or cable behind a trim panel. The owner's manual for your car shows where it is and how to use it. Only use it when charging has stopped.

At a Supercharger, call Tesla Roadside on 01628 450 660 if the cable will not come free. At another network, call the helpline shown on the charger.

On socket chargers

With your own cable, the charger end may stay locked by the charger until the session ends. Ending the session on the charger or in its app releases it.
