Charging a Tesla in the UK: the essentials

Tesla Superchargers

Plug in and the car pays through your Tesla account; there is nothing to tap or scan. Most UK Supercharger sites are also open to other electric cars through the Tesla app. Prices change by site and time of day, and idle fees apply if you stay plugged in after charging at a busy site. Other rapid chargers

UK Teslas have a CCS2 charge port (older Model S and Model X need an adapter or a retrofit), so they can use almost every rapid DC charger in the country, from motorway hubs to supermarket car parks. Each network has its own app or card, and many now take contactless. Charging on other networks explains how to start and pay on each one.

Slower AC chargers

Lamp-post, workplace, hotel and car park chargers are usually AC Type 2 points that run at 7 to 22 kW. Many have no cable attached, so keep a Type 2 cable in the car. They are ideal when you are parked for a few hours anyway. Read which cable you need and AC vs DC charging.

What the rules guarantee

The Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 require contactless payment on new chargers of 8 kW and above and on rapid chargers of 50 kW and above, prices shown in pence per kWh, a free 24-hour helpline, and open data so sites like this can show where chargers are and whether they are free. The rules in plain English.

How this directory stays accurate

Every charger comes from open data and Tesla's own site list, checked and refreshed every month. Drivers can report a broken charger or a blocked bay on any charger page, and live availability is shown wherever a network publishes it. Our editorial policy explains how we check facts.
