Road tax (VED) for Teslas

Checked 2 October 2026. Rules and prices change, so check the sources below before you rely on a figure.

Electric cars stopped being exempt from vehicle excise duty (VED) in April 2025. Teslas now pay road tax like other cars, with a few differences.

What you pay in 2026/27

Car Year 1 Years 2 onwards
New zero-emission car registered from 1 April 2026 £10 £200 standard rate
Zero-emission car registered March 2017 to March 2026 Already past year 1 £200 standard rate
Zero-emission car registered March 2001 to March 2017 Already past year 1 £20

The expensive car supplement

Cars with a list price over the threshold pay an extra amount each year in years 2 to 6. For fully electric cars, the threshold rose from £40,000 to £50,000 from April 2026. The supplement is £440 a year in 2026/27.

The list price is the price when new, including options, not what you paid. A Tesla with options that took it over £50,000 can be caught even if you bought it used.

How to check your car

Enter your registration on the GOV.UK vehicle enquiry service to see the tax due date and rate, or use the DVLA reminder when it arrives.

Coming next

From April 2028 the government plans a pay-per-mile charge for electric cars on top of VED. See Pay-per-mile tax.
