Supercharger prices, idle fees and congestion fees

Supercharger prices in the UK vary by site and by time of day. The exact price for any site is in the car's navigation and the Tesla app before you go. Tesla owners pay less than drivers of other makes.

How prices work

• Per kWh. You pay for the energy that goes into the car.
• Time of day. Most sites are cheaper overnight and early in the morning. CAR magazine reported one London site charging Tesla owners 29p per kWh from midnight to 4am, 24p from 4am to 8am and 47p for the rest of the day.
• Tesla and non-Tesla prices. At the same site, non-Tesla drivers without membership were charged 32p to 63p per kWh. Zapmap lists 63p per kWh as the standard non-member rate at 150 to 400 kW Tesla chargers (September 2026).

Membership

Tesla owners get member prices automatically. Drivers of other electric cars can pay for Supercharging Membership, which CAR magazine reported at £8.99 a month or £90 a year. It is only worth it for non-Tesla drivers who Supercharge often.

Idle fees

When a Supercharger site is at least half full, Tesla charges an idle fee for every minute a car stays plugged in after it finishes charging. There is a short grace period, and the car and app warn you when charging is nearly done. Top Gear reported 50p per minute in 2023, doubling when the site is full; CAR magazine reports up to £1 per minute. The current rate shows in the app.

How to avoid idle fees:

• Set your charge limit to what you need and watch the notification.
• Use the app to check progress while you eat or shop.
• On busy sites, unplug as soon as you have enough.

Congestion fees

At some busy sites Tesla may also charge a congestion fee to encourage drivers to move on once the battery is well charged. If this applies, it is shown in the car before you start.

Seeing what you paid

Every session is listed in the Tesla app under Charging, with the energy, price and any fees. You can download receipts for business expense claims.
