Insuring a Tesla in the UK
Many owners are surprised by their first Tesla insurance quote. The cars are safe and well equipped, but repair costs drive premiums.
Why premiums are high
- Repair costs. Parts, specialist bodyshops and the large castings used in newer models make some repairs expensive.
- Write-offs. Insurers may write a car off rather than repair damage near the battery or structure. See Tesla write-offs.
- Performance. Fast acceleration puts some versions in high insurance groups.
- Repair times. Waiting for parts can mean long courtesy car bills.
How to pay less
- Compare widely, including insurers that specialise in electric cars.
- Add a named, experienced driver where it genuinely reflects how the car is used.
- Raise the voluntary excess if you can afford it.
- Park off-street or in a garage and say so.
- Use Sentry Mode and the built-in dashcam to collect evidence after incidents. It won't cut your premium directly but can help with claims.
- Check the cover: battery, charging cable theft, home charger damage and approved repairers.
Tesla's own insurance
Tesla offers its own insurance in some countries. Check Tesla's UK website for whether it is available to you.
