Sentry Mode in the UK
Sentry Mode turns your parked Tesla into a security camera. The car's cameras watch the area around it, and if something touches the car or comes too close, it records, shows a warning on the screen and can sound the alarm and alert your phone.
Setting it up
- Insert a USB drive formatted for Tesla's dashcam (some cars include one in the glovebox).
- Turn on Sentry Mode from the car or the app.
- Choose to exclude home, work or favourite locations, so it doesn't run where you don't need it.
UK data protection points
Recording people in public can bring UK data protection law into play. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) guidance on domestic CCTV is the closest guide for private users. Sensible habits:
- Use recordings for security, not to watch people.
- Keep footage only as long as you need it, then delete it.
- Don't post clips of identifiable people online without good reason.
- If someone asks for footage of themselves, respond sensibly.
This isn't legal advice. If you're unsure, check the ICO's guidance.
When to switch it off
- On ferries and in busy car parks where it will trigger constantly.
- When the battery is low, as it uses energy. See Sentry Mode battery drain.
