Using your Tesla

Using dashcam and Sentry footage

Checked 2 October 2026. Rules and prices change, so check the sources below before you rely on a figure.

Your Tesla's cameras can record while you drive (Dashcam) and while parked (Sentry Mode). The footage is saved to a USB drive.

Saving a clip

  • Tap the dashcam icon on the touchscreen to save the last few minutes.
  • Turn on the option to save a clip when you sound the horn, so you can save hands-free.
  • Sentry events are saved automatically when triggered.

Viewing and exporting

View clips on the touchscreen in the Dashcam Viewer, or plug the USB drive into a computer. Clips are organised by date and camera.

Sending footage to the police

Many UK police forces accept footage of dangerous driving through the National Dash Cam Safety Portal or their own online forms. You upload the video, give a statement and say where it happened. Police decide whether to act, and you may occasionally be asked to give evidence.

  • Submit the original, unedited footage.
  • Report as soon as possible, ideally within a few days.

Insurance claims

Tell your insurer you have footage when you report a claim. Keep a copy of the original files.

Hit while parked

If someone damages your car while parked, Sentry may have captured their number plate. Report it to the police (and your insurer) with the clip and the time.
