Range explained: WLTP vs the real world
The range quoted when you buy a Tesla is the WLTP figure, measured on a standard laboratory test. Real-world range is lower, especially on motorways and in winter.
What to expect
EV Database estimates real-world ranges for current UK Teslas of about 235 to 360 miles depending on the model, in mild weather. In a UK winter, at motorway speeds, expect noticeably less.
What uses range
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Motorway speed | The biggest factor. 70 mph uses much more than 50 mph |
| Cold | Heating and a cold battery cut range in winter |
| Rain and wind | Wet roads and headwinds add resistance |
| Wheels | Larger wheels, and wheels without aero covers, cost range |
| Load | Roof boxes, bike racks and towing |
Percentage or miles?
You can show the battery as a percentage or as miles. Many owners use percentage, because the miles figure is based on the official rating, not how you're driving. For trips, trust the navigation's arrival prediction, which accounts for your route, speed and the weather.
Battery size and range
Range depends on the battery size and how efficient the car is. See the guides for Model 3, Model Y and Model S and X.
