Speed, range and cost
Air resistance rises with the square of speed, so motorway speed is the biggest thing you control. Driving a little slower stretches your range and cuts the cost of a trip.
Rough guide for a Model 3 or Model Y
| Speed | Typical use | Range compared with 60 mph |
|---|---|---|
| 60 mph | Efficient cruising | Best |
| 70 mph | Motorway limit | Roughly 10 to 15% less |
| 80 mph | Illegal in the UK | Roughly 25% less |
These are typical figures; weather, wind, tyres and load all make a difference.
When slower saves time
If driving at 70 mph means an extra charging stop, slowing to 60 mph for the last part of a leg can get you there sooner overall. The car's navigation shows the predicted battery at arrival and will suggest slowing down if you are cutting it fine.
When faster is fine
If the next Supercharger is well within range, keeping up with traffic costs a little more energy but saves time, and the charging curve means a slightly longer stop at a low battery is quick.
Other things that cost range
Cold weather, heavy rain, headwinds, roof boxes and towing. See Range explained.
