Towing with a Tesla
Model Y, Model X and some Model 3 cars can tow with a factory or approved tow bar. Check your car's handbook and V5C for its legal towing limit before you hitch up.
Range when towing
A caravan or large trailer adds weight and, more importantly, air resistance. Owners commonly see range fall by a third to a half with a caravan. Slower speeds help a lot: the legal limit when towing is 60 mph on motorways and dual carriageways.
The car has a Trailer Mode that adjusts the predicted range and some driver assistance settings. Turn it on when you hitch up.
Charging while towing
Most UK charging bays are not designed for a car and trailer:
- Unhitch in a safe space in the car park, charge, then re-hitch. Plan time for this.
- Pull-through bays exist at some newer hubs. Look at photos on charger apps or ask the network.
- Never block other bays or the car park while charging with a trailer attached.
Planning
- Plan shorter legs, around half your normal range.
- Charge to a higher level before each leg.
- Pick chargers with large car parks. Motorway services and newer hubs are easier than small car parks.
- Some campsites offer hook-up charging. Ask before you plug in. See Mobile Connector.
