Using the Tesla Mobile Connector
The Tesla Mobile Connector is a portable charger that plugs into an ordinary socket. It is the slowest way to charge, but it works almost anywhere there is power.
How fast it charges
| Socket | Typical power | Miles of range per hour (Model 3 or Y) |
|---|---|---|
| UK 3-pin (13 A) | about 2.3 kW | about 7 to 9 |
| Blue Commando, 16 A | about 3.7 kW | about 12 to 15 |
| Blue Commando, 32 A | about 7.4 kW | about 25 to 30 |
Figures are approximate. Range per hour depends on the car and the weather.
Commando sockets need the matching adapter for the Mobile Connector. They are common at campsites, farms and event venues.
Using a household socket safely
- Use a socket on a circuit in good condition. Old sockets and plugs can overheat over hours of continuous use.
- Do not use an extension lead or a cable reel. See Can you use an extension lead?
- If the plug or socket gets hot to the touch, stop charging.
- The car lets you lower the charging current on the touchscreen. Dropping to 10 A is kinder to old wiring.
When it makes sense
- Overnight top-ups at friends' or family's homes.
- Campsites with hook-ups (ask the site first; some charge extra or forbid EV charging).
- As a backup on holiday when the nearest public charger is far away.
For daily charging at home, a dedicated wall charger is faster and safer. See Home charger installation and grants.
