Charging basics

Can you use an extension lead to charge?

Checked 2 October 2026.

No. Charging an electric car through a household extension lead or cable reel is not recommended by carmakers or electrical safety bodies.

Why

Charging draws a heavy current for many hours. Ordinary extension leads are not designed for that. Coiled cable reels are worse, because the coils trap heat. The risks are melted plugs, damaged sockets and fire.

Safer options

  • Use a socket close enough to reach with the Mobile Connector's own cable.
  • Ask an electrician to fit an outdoor weatherproof socket near where you park, or better, a dedicated home charger.
  • Use a charger designed for the job, such as a public charger with its own cable.

If you have no choice

If you must use a lead in an emergency, use a heavy-duty, fully unwound outdoor lead rated for the current, lower the charging current on the car's touchscreen, and check the plug for heat regularly. Never daisy-chain leads.
