Camp Mode and sleeping in your Tesla

Checked 2 October 2026.

Camp Mode keeps the climate, air flow, interior lights and USB power on all night, and turns off the alarm and Sentry Mode so you don't trigger them. Many owners use it for camping trips, festivals and long breaks.

Setting up the car

  • Fold the rear seats flat. Model Y has a large flat area; Model 3 is tighter. Many owners buy a mattress made to fit their model.
  • Crack a window slightly or use the vent setting for fresh air. The car manages humidity with climate on.
  • Set a comfortable temperature and turn on Camp Mode from the climate menu.

How much battery does a night use?

It depends on how hard the climate system works. In mild weather, overnight use is modest. In cold weather, heating uses more. Leave with plenty of charge, ideally camp near a charger, and check the battery before you sleep.

Where you can stay overnight in the UK

  • Campsites and holiday parks that allow sleeping in cars are the safest choice. Some have hook-ups or chargers.
  • Private land: only with the landowner's permission.
  • Car parks and laybys: many have "no overnight parking" or "no sleeping" rules. Check signs and local byelaws.
  • Wild camping: England and Wales have no general right to camp; on private land you need permission. Scotland's outdoor access rights don't cover vehicles, so use campsites or sites that welcome campervans.

Drink and the car

In the UK you can be prosecuted for being "in charge" of a car while over the drink-drive limit even if you're asleep and the car isn't moving. Don't sleep in your car after drinking.
