Living with a Tesla

Boot and frunk space

Checked 2 October 2026.

Teslas have more storage than they appear to, because there's no engine or exhaust. Tesla publishes exact figures for each model on its website.

Where the space is

  • Main boot: large on the Model Y (an estate-like hatchback), more traditional on the Model 3 (a saloon with a boot lid).
  • Sub-boot: a deep well under the boot floor. Great for bags of shopping that might tip over, and for cables.
  • Frunk: under the bonnet. See The frunk.
  • Rear seats: fold flat for long items; Model Y's flat floor is popular for Camp Mode.

Packing tips

  1. Heavy, fragile things in the sub-boot. Eggs and bottles stay put even under hard acceleration.
  2. Cables in the frunk so they're easy to reach without unpacking.
  3. Soft bags rather than hard cases fit better in the Model 3 boot opening.
  4. Load low and inside before you reach for a roof box, which costs range. See Roof boxes and bike racks.
