Planning a road trip in a Tesla

Checked 2 October 2026.

For most UK journeys, you can just type the destination into the car. The Trip Planner adds Supercharger stops, tells you how long to charge at each one and predicts your battery on arrival.

Before you go

  1. Charge at home to your normal daily limit, or higher (up to 90 to 100%) for a long first leg. LFP batteries are happy at 100%; check the guide for your battery.
  2. Enter the destination the night before to see the plan.
  3. Check the weather. Rain, cold and headwinds use more energy, and the car allows for some of this.

On the way

  • The car updates the plan if you drive faster or slower than expected.
  • It preconditions the battery before each Supercharger.
  • Live stall availability shows on the map.

Changing the plan

  • Add or remove a stop: tap the trip list and choose a different Supercharger, or add a waypoint. The car recalculates.
  • Use a non-Tesla charger: add it as a waypoint. Use manual preconditioning if your car has it, so the battery is warm on arrival.
  • Want longer breaks? Charge for longer at fewer stops. It costs more time overall but suits families.

Plan a backup

Look up your route on our route planners or road pages to see every Supercharger and rapid charger on the way. If a site is full or broken, you'll know the next option.
