Driving in the Highlands and remote areas
Remote parts of the UK have fewer chargers and longer gaps. A Tesla handles them easily with a bit more planning.
Plan around the gaps
- Check our North Coast 500 and A9 pages for every rapid charger in order and the longest gaps.
- See charging deserts for places furthest from a rapid charger.
- Charge higher than usual before a remote leg. Hills, wind and single-track roads use energy.
Overnight charging
The best plan in remote areas is to charge where you sleep. Many hotels, B&Bs and holiday lets have chargers; others will let you use a socket with the Mobile Connector. Ask when you book. See Holiday charging tips.
Have a plan B
- Note two chargers ahead, not one. A single rapid charger in a remote village may be in use or out of order.
- ChargePlace Scotland runs many chargers in rural Scotland; download its app or get its card before you go.
- Mobile signal can be patchy: a contactless card or RFID card is a useful backup to an app.
Ferries
For islands, arrive at the port with enough charge to reach a charger on the other side. See Ferry crossings.
