Charging tips for private hire and taxi drivers
Teslas are popular with private hire drivers for their low running costs and comfort. High mileage makes charging strategy important.
Plan charging around your shift
- Charge overnight at home on an EV tariff if you can. It's by far the cheapest.
- Use off-peak Supercharger prices where they suit your hours. Many sites are cheaper overnight and early morning.
- Top up during quiet periods rather than waiting until the battery is low at a busy time.
London
- Electric cars and private hire vehicles get a 25% discount on the Congestion Charge until March 2030 if registered for the Cleaner Vehicle Discount. See Congestion charge.
- London has the UK's densest charging network. See our London pages.
Costs to watch
- Tyres wear fast with high mileage and a heavy car. See Tyres.
- Insurance for hire and reward is specialist. Compare widely.
- Idle fees at busy Superchargers add up; set notifications.
Keep receipts
Download charging receipts from the Tesla app and network apps for your tax return. Business mileage and charging costs may be allowable expenses; ask an accountant.
