Tyres for your Tesla
Teslas are heavy and quick, which is hard on tyres. Choosing and looking after them well saves money and range.
Why tyres wear faster
- Electric cars are heavier than similar petrol cars.
- Instant torque means hard acceleration scrubs the tread.
- Rear tyres on rear-wheel-drive cars often wear fastest.
Smooth driving makes a big difference to tyre life.
Choosing tyres
- Tesla-marked tyres (with a "T0" or similar marking on the sidewall) are made to Tesla's specification. Many include foam inside to reduce road noise.
- EV-focused tyres from major brands are designed for weight, low rolling resistance and quietness.
- Check the load index matches or exceeds the original.
UK rules and checks
- The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread. Many experts suggest replacing at about 3 mm.
- Check pressures monthly against the label on the door pillar. Under-inflated tyres wear faster and cost range.
- Rotate tyres as the owner's manual recommends, and check alignment if you hit a kerb or pothole.
Winter or all-season tyres?
Most UK drivers are fine on summer tyres. If you live somewhere with regular snow and ice, all-season or winter tyres improve grip. They may cost a little range.
