Using your Tesla

Phone key not working?

Checked 2 October 2026.

Your phone works as the key using Bluetooth. Usually you just walk up and the car unlocks. When it doesn't, try these.

Quick fixes

  1. Use your key card. Tap it on the pillar between the front and rear doors (Model 3 and Model Y). Always carry it as a backup.
  2. Open the Tesla app. Bringing the app to the front often wakes Bluetooth up.
  3. Toggle Bluetooth off and on on your phone.
  4. Check the app's permissions: Bluetooth, location and background refresh must be allowed.
  5. Restart your phone.

Underground car parks

The phone key uses Bluetooth, which works without mobile signal. But app functions like remote unlocking need an internet connection on both the phone and the car. In car parks with no signal, walk up to the car rather than relying on remote unlock, and carry the key card.

Still failing?

  • Remove and re-pair the phone key in the car's Locks menu (you need the key card to authorise it).
  • Check for a phone or Tesla app update.
  • A key fob is available from Tesla if you prefer a physical key.
