How to reboot a Tesla

Checked 2 October 2026.

Like any computer, the touchscreen can occasionally freeze or misbehave: no sound, a laggy map or the camera view not showing. A reboot fixes most glitches.

Touchscreen reboot (soft reset)

  1. Park the car in a safe place. On Model 3 and Model Y, the touchscreen shows your speed, so it will go blank while it restarts.
  2. Hold down both scroll wheels on the steering wheel until the screen goes black.
  3. Wait for the Tesla logo and the screen to come back, usually within a minute.

Driving controls keep working during a touchscreen reboot, but you lose the speed display and other screen functions until it restarts, so do it when parked.

Full power off

If a problem keeps coming back:

  1. Park, and go to Controls > Safety > Power Off.
  2. Wait at least two minutes without touching anything: don't open doors or press the brake.
  3. Press the brake to wake the car up.

When to book service

If the same problem returns after a full power off, or warning messages appear, book a service appointment in the Tesla app and include photos or videos.
