What to do after an accident

Checked 2 October 2026.

After a collision, the steps are the same as in any car, with a few Tesla-specific extras.

At the scene

  1. Stop safely and turn on hazard lights. On a motorway, get everyone behind the barrier.
  2. Check for injuries and call 999 if anyone is hurt or the road is blocked.
  3. Save the dashcam clip. Tap the dashcam icon on the screen or sound the horn if you've set "save on honk".
  4. Exchange details: names, addresses, registration numbers and insurance. UK law requires you to stop and give details if anyone is injured or property is damaged, and to report to the police within 24 hours if you can't exchange details at the scene.
  5. Take photos of the cars, the road and any damage.

Afterwards

  • Tell your insurer as soon as possible and mention your footage.
  • Use a Tesla-approved bodyshop where possible, especially for structural or battery-area damage. Your insurer may have its own approved repairers.
  • Report warning messages in the app if the car shows any after the collision.

If the doors won't open

See Emergency door release.

Electric car safety

If you see smoke, hear popping or hissing from the battery area, or smell burning, get everyone well away from the car and call 999. Tell the fire service it's an electric car.
