Musty air conditioning smell
A musty smell from the vents, especially when you first turn on the air conditioning, is a common complaint. It usually comes from moisture and bacteria in the air conditioning evaporator and filter.
Fixes
- Replace the cabin air filter. Tesla's maintenance schedule recommends replacing it periodically; many owners change it more often if they notice a smell. It's a DIY job on Model 3 and Model Y with the right parts, or book it in the app.
- Clean the evaporator. Tesla Service or a specialist can treat it with an antibacterial foam or cleaner.
- Run a dry-out. Some cars have an option to dry the air conditioning system after you park. If yours does, turn it on.
Stop it coming back
- Turn off air conditioning (A/C) for the last few minutes of a journey so the fan can dry the evaporator.
- Avoid leaving recirculation on all the time.
- Replace the filter at least as often as Tesla recommends.
If the smell is chemical or burning rather than musty, stop and book a service check.
