Model S "pink eye" headlights

Checked 2 October 2026.

Some owners of older Model S cars noticed the daytime running light strips in their headlights slowly changing from white to a pinkish colour. Owners call it "pink eye".

Why it happens

The LED strips age in a way that changes the colour of light they give off. It's a cosmetic issue and doesn't affect the main headlight beam.

Which cars

It's mostly reported on earlier Model S headlight designs. If you're looking at a used Model S, look at the running lights in daylight and in a dark car park.

Getting it fixed

  • Ask Tesla Service: depending on age and warranty, they may replace the headlight unit.
  • Independent specialists offer repairs or replacement units.
  • Both sides should match, so replace in pairs if one has changed colour noticeably.
