Buying a used Tesla
Used Teslas can be excellent value. These checks help you avoid surprises.
Checks every buyer should do
- History check: finance, write-off category and theft. See Cat S and Cat N.
- MOT history for cars over three years old, free on GOV.UK.
- Battery health: ask for a recent battery health test or a range reading at 100%.
- Warranty remaining: the basic and battery warranties run from the first registration date.
- Service history: ask the seller to show the service history in their Tesla app.
Tesla-specific checks
- Features: Enhanced Autopilot, FSD, acceleration boosts and premium connectivity. Some features bought by the first owner stay with the car; others don't transfer when sold privately. Check the car's software screen and confirm with Tesla.
- Free Supercharging: some early cars came with free Supercharging, but in many cases it doesn't transfer to a new owner. Don't pay extra for it unless Tesla confirms it applies.
- Charge port: older Model S and Model X may have a Tesla-only port without a CCS upgrade.
- Battery type: LFP or nickel-based affects the daily charge limit. See Battery care.
On the test drive
- Charge at a Supercharger if you can, to check charging works.
- Test the windows, doors, cameras and touchscreen.
- Listen for suspension knocks and wind noise.
Transferring the car
After you buy, add the car to your Tesla account through the app's ownership transfer process.
