Free EV charging in the UK
Free public charging is rarer than it was, but it hasn't disappeared. You'll find it mostly at:
- Hotels, restaurants and attractions for guests and customers, including many Tesla Destination chargers.
- Some supermarkets and retailers, usually on slower AC chargers while you shop.
- Workplaces, where employers may offer free or cheap charging.
- Some car dealers and community chargers.
Our free charging page lists every site in our data that is recorded as free.
Check before you rely on it
- "Free" offers change without notice. Check the network app or call ahead.
- Free chargers are often customer-only or time-limited. Parking charges may still apply.
- Free AC chargers are slow. A 7 kW charger adds about 25 miles an hour, so it is a top-up, not a fill.
Is it worth a detour?
On a home tariff, charging costs a few pence per mile. A long detour to save a few pounds can cost more in time than it saves. Free charging is best when you're stopping anyway.
