Charging at work
A charger at work can cover most of your weekly driving, especially if you can't charge at home.
Is free workplace charging taxed?
Charging an employee's electric car at or near the workplace is generally exempt from benefit-in-kind tax in the UK, whether the car is a company car or the employee's own. Check with your employer's payroll team for your situation.
Etiquette
- Workplaces often have fewer chargers than electric cars. Agree a rota or a time limit with colleagues.
- Move your car when it's charged, or as agreed.
- Use a shared chat or app to coordinate.
Speed
Most workplace chargers are 7 kW AC, adding 25 to 30 miles an hour. Over a working day, that's plenty for most commutes. You may need your own Type 2 cable. See Which cable do I need?
For employers
Government grants have been available for workplace chargers. Check GOV.UK for the current workplace charging scheme.
