The yoke steering wheel

Checked 2 October 2026.

Some Model S and Model X cars have a yoke: a steering wheel with no top half. It's divisive.

What owners like

  • A clear view of the instrument display.
  • A modern, aircraft-style look.
  • On motorways with Autopilot, it's comfortable to hold.

What owners dislike

  • Roundabouts and tight turns. UK driving involves lots of hand-over-hand steering at low speed. Without the top of the wheel, this takes practice.
  • Buttons instead of stalks. Indicators and wipers are touch buttons on the yoke.
  • Wear. Some owners report the covering wearing or peeling.

Can you change it?

Tesla has offered a round steering wheel for some yoke cars. Ask Tesla Service about availability, cost and whether it can be fitted to your car. Independent kits exist, but check what they do to the airbag, warranty and insurance.

Buying used

Try a yoke car on roundabouts and in a car park before you buy.
