Supercharger V2, V3 and V4 explained
Tesla has built three main generations of Supercharger in the UK. They all look similar, but they behave differently.
| Version | Peak power per car | Power sharing | Cable |
|---|---|---|---|
| V2 | up to about 150 kW | Two stalls share a cabinet | Short; older sites also had a Tesla-only plug |
| V3 | up to 250 kW | No sharing between stalls | Short, thinner liquid-cooled cable |
| V4 | up to 250 kW for current Model 3 and Model Y | No sharing between stalls | Longer cable that reaches more cars |
How to tell them apart
- V2: stalls numbered in pairs like 1A and 1B. Taller, older-style posts.
- V3 and V4: stalls numbered 1, 2, 3. V4 posts are taller and slimmer with a longer cable and, at some sites, a card reader.
Does it matter for my car?
For a Long Range Model 3 or Model Y, V3 and V4 give the same peak speed today. The difference you feel is mostly at V2 sites, where charging is slower and sharing with a neighbour slows both cars.
For older Model S and Model X with a Tesla-only charge port, some V2 sites in the UK still had a Tesla Type 2 connector. Newer sites only have CCS2.
Longer cables and parking
V4's longer cable means non-Tesla cars with charge ports in other places can reach without taking two bays. With a Tesla, reverse in as usual.
